Name Change for Scarborough Local as Part of Major £150,000 Revamp

The Spa on Victoria Road in Scarborough

The Spa on Victoria Road in Scarborough is to close after service on Saturday 6th June for a Β£150,000 refurbishment by HEINEKEN-owned Star Pubs and new licensees Andrea Allison and Mike Sadler, who are taking on the lease. It will reopen as The Cambridge on Wednesday 1st July at 3pm as a quality, family- and dog-friendly local offering live sport and entertainment.

Andrea and Mike, who previously ran The Cask Inn in Scarborough, have been managing The Spa under a temporary agreement for the past year ahead of the refurbishment. The pub had rarely opened before they took it on, so they set about bringing it back to life by redecorating and installing a kitchen to enable it to serve food.

Tucked away just a short walk from the railway station and the Stephen Joseph Theatre, The Cambridge will be transformed by the investment. Improvements include a full internal and external refurbishment, the installation of a new stage and upgraded sports facilities, including a new pool table, new dartboards and additional high-definition TVs with Sky Sports, ensuring live sport can be viewed from anywhere in the pub.

Inside, the dated interior – comprising a bar, snug and sports area – will be transformed with a warm colour palette of russet and teal, complemented by decorative pendant and wall lighting. Customers will be able to choose from a range of seating, including leather banquettes, freestanding leather and upholstered chairs, and velvet stools. Scarborough-themed memorabilia will adorn the walls.

Externally, the pub will be redecorated in striking white and grey, with new signage, lighting and hanging baskets completing the refreshed look.

When The Cambridge reopens, Andrea and Mike plan to host a weekly Tuesday quiz night, karaoke and live music at weekends, as well as relaxed Sunday afternoon blues sessions.

The drinks range will include Birra Moretti, Cruzcampo, Foster's, John Smith's, Murphy's and Inch's, alongside three cask ales – Theakston XB, an IPA and a rotating guest beer – plus a carefully selected wine list and an extensive range of spirits.

The food menu will feature home-cooked pub classics such as chilli, curries, ribs and gammon, served Tuesday to Sunday evenings, as well as traditional Sunday roasts.

Andrea says:

"Mike and I both live nearby, so we know what's currently missing on our doorstep. We want to recreate the neighbourhood feel we had at The Cask Inn, offering quality home-cooked food and a wide selection of drinks. We're also keen to support the community through fundraising for local charities and by providing opportunities to showcase local talent.

"When we reopen, we'll have a fantastic new stage that's ideal for live performances. We intend to make the most of it with a weekend of live music to celebrate our launch. We can't wait to open the doors and welcome both new and returning customers to this hidden gem, helping to create many wonderful memories and good times."

Star Pubs Business Development Manager Matthew Williams adds:

"We're delighted to be transforming The Spa alongside Andrea and Mike, giving it the investment it needs to thrive and taking it to the next level. The refurbishment will help put the pub firmly on the map and create a local that residents can enjoy and be proud of. I wish Andrea, Mike and their customers many happy years ahead."
