Neil Foukes, part of a team of four custodians, took over the Boat & Horses in 2023. With an Armed Forces background and a passion for helping others, Neil’s vision was to create a true “community hub” - a place where everyone feels welcome and supported. Star Pubs played a pivotal role in this journey, offering guidance and resources that empowered Neil and his co-licensees to transform the pub into a thriving local landmark.
A pub with purpose

The pub’s transformation began when Neil, Debbie, Martin, and Jackie stepped in during a challenging period in 2023. Their goal was clear: to create a welcoming environment for locals, veterans, families, and dog-lovers alike. As Neil puts it, “We are not a pub – we are a community hub.”

From advice on renovations to practical assistance with marketing and cellar management, the partnership gave the licensees confidence to focus on what matters most: building a warm, inclusive pub that reflects the spirit of Beeston Rylands. The pub now features an upgraded bar, a comfortable lounge honouring local veterans, a stage-fitted function room, an accessible garden, and a car park hosting markets and food trucks. These changes have enhanced the venue’s appeal while respecting its history and military traditions.
Neil and his team view themselves as custodians of the building, determined to use it for the benefit of the community. Renovations have been thoughtful, blending new amenities with familiar faces and touches of military heritage. The Boat & Horses hasn’t lost its soul - it’s grown, with a renewed focus on making everyone feel at home.

Quality is at the heart of everything they do. “We do the right thing and we do things properly. We’re a pub and we serve decent beer. In fact, we have won SmartDispense Pint of 2025 for the region!” The SmartDispense system ensures every pint meets the highest standards, while themed nights and weekends bring in food trucks serving smash burgers, pizza, and more, offering something for every taste.
