Wylam Community buys a Defibrillator

Paul Johnson and Kelly Hopkins took the helm at The Ship Inn, Wylam in July 2017. Since then they have become a real hub in the community.

Their latest venture has been to orchestrate the purchase of an AED Defibrillator machine for the village.

The pair noticed the lack of a device in the surrounding areas and took it upon themselves to make Wylam a “Heartsafe” village.

A fund raising dinner, raffle and auction were held at the pub in September with over £1300 being raised towards the purchase.

With help from Cardioproof Uk, the AED has been purchased, installed, registered and is ready to go.

Dr Michael Norton from Cardioproof “In the North East, approximately 1600 people per year receive a resuscitation attempt for a cardiac arrest that has occurred outside of hospital. Every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces survival by 10%. An AED is a device that can safely deliver an electric shock to restart the heart”

The Ship Inn are holding a first aid and AED training session at the pub on Saturday 8th December at 3pm. Invited members of the village will be show CPR and how to use the AED in the event of cardiac arrest.

Paul and Kelly would like to also invite any members of the media who wish to cover the story.

Paul Johnson “It’s fantastic when members of a community come together and make great things happen”
