Work starts of the The Railway, Lowdham

New local pub operator The Secret Pub Company and Star Pubs & Bars, are together investing £400K on a major refurbishment of The Railway Inn in Lowdham to broaden its appeal and create a great family friendly village pub.

The pub which has been closed since the start of the year will reopen on 23rd March as The Railway creating 20 jobs.

Food will be a major feature of the pub, as one of the Secret Pub Company directors is Mark Osborne, who was head chef at Harts and Café Bleu, Newark for eight years during which time it won the Best Out of Town Restaurant in the Nottingham restaurant Awards for five consecutive years.

Investment is being spent on creating a distinct interior with areas styled to create different moods.  There will be a mix of mosaic tiled and carpet floors, a log burning stove, and different styles of comfortable chairs with cushions, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The dining areas will seat 90 and feature a unique floor-to-ceiling pass enabling diners to see into the kitchen without the accompanying sounds and smells. The middle of the pub is being opened up to create a locals’ bar and seating area for drinkers.

Outside, a new elevated terrace is being built out from the pub with teak tables and chairs to provide alfresco drinking and dining for 70.  Parasols will shade diners during the day and subtle lighting extend usage in the evening.  Great play equipment will keep children entertained in the large beer garden.

The Railway will open from 10am for barista style coffee, homemade cakes and pastries.  A unique coffee blend has been created for The Railway by local Nottingham coffee roaster, Stewarts of Trent Bridge.  The pub will offer sandwiches as well as a set lunch and evening meals.

The menu will feature freshly cooked British cuisine with traditional pub dishes simply done.  Examples of dishes include: Wild Mushrooms on Toast with Comfit Garlic, Truffle, Shaved Pecorino; Braised Shoulder of Lamb, Creamed Potato, Roast Root Vegetables and Almond Pesto and the all-time favourite, Sticky Toffee Pudding, Caramel Sauce, Vanilla Ice Cream. The pub will offer classic children's dishes as well as half portions of adult dishes, all of which will be freshly cooked.

The Railway will offer a choice of five hand-pulled ales and craft lagers as well as a selection of exclusive, award winning wines from House of Townend, family wine merchants.  As part of the refurbishment, HEINEKEN is installing the latest beer dispense technology, the HEINEKEN Smart Dispense system, which produces consistent superior quality beer and cider.

As well as great food drink and hospitality, The Railway will have live acoustic music to unwind to on Friday nights.  There will also be a calendar of fun, creative events throughout the year that will appeal to everyone.

David Hage, director of The Secret Pub Company, has 25 years’ experience in hospitality running many large venues and was born in the next village.  He used to visit the pub with his father when he was very young and said:  "I know The Railway of old so when it came up for lease, leapt at the opportunity to take it on.  We could see it had real potential. It just needed a new vision with care and attention lavished on it.  Mark and I are both parents so are keen to make The Railway a place where families are welcomed with open arms.  We want to support the village and local clubs and make the pub a focal point for the whole community to enjoy. We want the locals of Lowdham to be proud of their village pub and to want to show it off to their friends.”

David Pritchard, operations director for Star Pubs & Bars, said: “HEINEKEN is a passionate supporter of great pubs so we’re delighted to be investing in The Railway enabling David and Mark to create a fabulous family pub that the village can be proud of.  They’ve a wealth of hospitality experience and local knowledge so know what people in the area want and anything they do will be of the highest quality.”
