Work has begun on a major refurbishment of the Crown & Sceptre

Building work has begun on a major refurbishment of the Crown & Sceptre on the high street in Uxbridge. In partnership with Austin Whelan, who has the Black Bull in Ruislip, another of our sites, we’ve invested £400k into transforming the site into a top-end traditional Irish pub to be renamed Whelans. The building work will take seven weeks, reopening around 19th January.

Funds are being spent on a complete overhaul of the pub, reconfiguring the inside to create a traditional Irish street scene with shop fronts as a backdrop.  An attractive outside area with awning, planting, heaters and seating will also be created. The décor and comfortable seating will ensure Whelans has broad appeal among women and men of all ages, with children welcome till 7pm.

Whelans will open for breakfast and offer coffee and teas in the morning, light bites at lunch as well as food in the evening till 9pm. The pub, which has a late license, will show Sky Sport on nine screens and offer evening entertainment such as live bands and open mic nights. Good wholesome pub food will be on offer, ranging from paninis, soup and sandwiches to Irish-influenced dishes such as Steak and Guinness pie, Irish Stew, Bacon and cabbage and a great Sunday roast. There will be a wide selection of wines, craft beer, Irish malt whiskeys and top quality gins as well as premium bottled lagers and draught cask ale.

Whelan said of his plans: “Whelans will be very different from the pastiche Irish theme bars which were commonplace in the 80s and 90s.  This new incarnation of an Irish pub will represent the very best of Irish hospitality with a great atmosphere and top quality food, drink and service. It will be very well-run, a welcoming and comfortable place to pop in for a coffee and snack while shopping, somewhere different to have lunch or a drink as well as a fun place for a great night out. The pub is in a great location near to be the train and bus stations and has a bus stop right outside. It’s also in an area of Uxbridge undergoing change, so the investment is good for the pub, locals and the area as a whole.”

Lawson Mountstevens, Managing Director of Star Pubs & Bars said: ““Pubs need investment to deliver excellent quality, attract customers and thrive at the heart of their communities.  The Crown & Sceptre, though in a great location on the high street had been closed for two and a half years.  We had earmarked it for investment but needed the right operator to take it forward. We have a great relationship with Austin and so are pleased to be helping him to realise his vision -  a great pub with broad appeal offering top quality food and drink and the best of Irish hospitality. He knows the area well and he’s made a great success of another Star pub, The Black Bull in Ruislip.  We wish him well.”
