Work has begun on a major £300K refurbishment of Golden Cross in Coventry

We have begun work on a major £300K refurbishment of Golden Cross in Coventry Hay Lane with licensee Charlotte Porter, with the help of her brother James, to broaden the pub’s appeal.  The pub will reopen in late December. 12 new jobs will be created as a result of the changes, which include the introduction of all-day food and barista style coffee.

In addition to restoring the fabric of the 1583 listed building, funds are being spent to open up the interior to create a lighter more spacious environment. Oak beams are being stripped back to a natural light oak, partition walls removed and new lighting installed. New furniture and carpets will bring the pub up to date and create a more welcoming and comfortable interior.

The outside of the pub is being redecorated and new signage added.  Sympathetic exterior lighting will highlight the building’s heritage.

Once renowned for its live music, Charlotte intends to put the Golden Cross back on the map as a live music venue, hosting bands two or three nights a week.

Following the refurbishment, the pub will have about 60 covers with coffee, a casual drinking and dining on the ground floor as well as a flexible area upstairs for eating, drinking and live music.  Customers will also be able to use the small beer garden.

The new food menu will feature a range of top quality traditional pub dishes such as the Ultimate cottage pie, Chilli Con Carne made with slow roast beef that melts in the mouth, and a range of home-made burgers, light bites and sandwiches.  There’ll also be homemade scones and cakes, afternoon teas and all day barista style coffee.

Drinks will include a range of cask ales, premium lagers and a wide selection of quality wines.  The Golden Cross will also stock the most extensive range of gins in Coventry.  And once established Charlotte, who will be managing the pub on day to day basis, intends to hold regular gin tastings and wine tastings.

Charlotte said: “I’m looking forward to creating a great traditional pub which appeals to city workers, shoppers, tourists and students. The Golden Cross is in a fabulous location next to the cathedral so should be somewhere Coventry can be proud of.  With Star’s investment and our plans, it will be.”

Lawson Mountstevens, Managing Director of Star Pubs & Bars said: “We’re pleased to be investing in improvements to The Golden Cross, a building of historical importance, making it relevant to Coventry pub-goers today and to help Charlotte create a pub everyone can enjoy.”
