Using Facebook to innovate

Iain Pert, PG Taverns has built a successful portfolio of five eclectic Edinburgh pubs, increasing trade by 5-10 times at each.  Creating an innovative culture has been key to the pubs’ evolution.  “Over half of the PG Taverns ideas come from staff.  85% are just ideas but 15% are put into practice once polished,” he said.  “I’ve learnt to relinquish control and listen to staff.  I can then take their ideas to the next level.”

An advocate of Facebook Closed User Groups, he believes staff are more likely to put forward ideas online than face to face and they’re a great way for the team to communicate with each other.  “It costs nothing to set one up and can be implemented immediately.”  But when it comes to reward & recognition this is much better done in a staff or training meeting.
