Star Pubs & Bars to invest in Lancashire pub refurbishments

Star Pubs & Bars is set to invest £938k in six pub refurbishment schemes in Lancashire, adding additional income streams wherever possible to broaden the pubs’ appeal and ensure they remain at the heart of their communities.  The lessees running the pubs will also invest £274k of additional funding.

The investment follows £1m spent by Star Pubs & Bars on upgrading Lancashire pubs in 2013.

The six projects earmarked for investment include: The Station Inn in Lytham, The Anchor Inn in Salterforth, The White Bull at Gisburn, the Plough at Grimsargh, The Hyndburn Bridge near Accrington and The Stanhill at Oswaldtwistle.

Work has already begun on the Station Tavern in Lytham where Star Pubs & Bars is spending £129k on a complete overhaul of the interior and exterior of the pub including upgrading the kitchen and creating a dining area to allow the pub to serve a wide range of food.  A comfortable seating area with sofas, soft chairs and an open fire where customers can enjoy coffees and snacks is also being created along with an entertainment zone for local bands.  The improvements will enable the pub to maximise trade from the railway station, which has no café or shop.

Says lessee, Debbie Malings:  “The Station Tavern is a brilliant building in a fantastic location and as local people who have both worked at the pub in the past, Simon and I could see its potential.  All it lacked was investment and some tender loving care. We’ve got the investment and we will certainly be putting in lots of love and attention. It’s very exciting to see our dreams for our first pub becoming a reality before our eyes.”

At the end of the month Star Pubs & Bars will begin a £70K external and internal redecoration of the historic canal side Anchor Inn in Salterforth.  The only pub in the village, its famous cellar stalactites and stalagmites are being preserved.  Changes to the pub will include a new kitchen, redesigned bar and new seating to bring the pub surroundings up to the standard of its new quality food offer.

Says lessee, Martin Andrew:  “We’re the only pub in the Salterforth area and are in easy walking distance of Barnoldswick, Kelbrook, Earby and Foulridge.  The changes to the kitchen will enable us to offer a new exciting menu of freshly cooked, freshly sourced local food alongside quality cask ales and wine.  With the upgraded interior, The Anchor Inn will be the place to eat, drink and be seen in.   Visitors will still be able to view our unique stalactites and stalagmites during the day on request.”

Once plans have been approved Star Pubs & Bars is set to invest £298k in a complete internal and external refurbishment of The White Bull at Gisburn, upgrading the pub’s facilities to transform it into what it believes will be one of the best food pubs in the area.

The company is currently looking for lessees to take on the Hyndburn Bridge, on the main road from Accrington to Clitheroe, which has been earmarked for a £140k investment.  This will include a complete internal and external refurbishment and upgrading the catering facilities to enable the pub to provide a fantastic food offering.

Star Pubs & Bars is also looking for lessees for the Stanhill in Oswaldtwistle, where it will be spending £211k on a full external and internal makeover to add character and create a more food focused pub.  Proposed work will include the installation of a carvery and a village style drinking bar as well as a new external eating and drinking area.

Says Chris Jowsey, trading director of Star Pubs & Bars “It’s tough running a pub with increasing competition for consumer’s disposable income.  To be successful in today’s market, pubs must improve their offering to customers and this means investing in pubs to create a welcoming and relevant environment for all customers.

“HEINEKEN is a passionate supporter of the great British pub. We have invested £600m purchasing and improving our Star Pubs & Bars estate since 2010 and this year will be investing more than ever in our pubs. We now own around 1,285 pubs the majority of which are operated by small independent businesses.  What we need is real investment, innovation and professionalism in the pub sector to continue to attract customers back to the great British pub.”

Anyone interested in the Hyndburn Bridge or Stanhill should contact Star Pubs & Bars on 0500 949596 as the company is keen that lessees have an input early in the design and planning process.
