Putting Outside Space To Work

Contemplating a garden makeover? Amanda Caygill and the team at the Barrelhouse Bar & Grill, Edinburgh spent just £6,000 and six weeks transforming their overgrown, disused garden into a popular destination with local residents. Now a 60-seat garden, it has increased the pub’s covers by 75%. It’s not just a place to sit; there’s a vegetable and herb patch plus a smoke house which smokes meat for the Barrelhouse’s BBQ menu with a coffee roasting shed planned for this year. Two shed bars - assembled from kits and painted - replicate the pub’s inside drinks range with one specialising in gins and the other in rums, whilst BBQs and spit roasts alleviate pressure on the kitchen on sunny days. Thanks to heating and lighting, the garden is used March to November despite chilly Scottish weather.
