Prestatyn pub's garden wins second national award

The CookHouse Pub & Carvery on the High Street in Prestatyn has beaten off competition from over 1,100 pubs to be named Pub with the Best Outdoor Area for the second year running in our national awards. The pub was also one of only six in the UK to be named a finalist for Most Family Friendly pub.

The judges travelled the length and breadth of the country inspecting pubs. They declared the Cookhouse Pub & Carvery’s garden to be ‘in another league’ with a ‘fantastic’ children’s play area, outdoor eating and dining, and heating, lighting and a jumbrella to enable year-round use. Colin and Kenny were also commended for enhancing the neighbourhood by investing in well maintained attractive year-round planting.

The children’s play area, which scored top marks, played a key part in the CookHouse Pub & Carvery scooping a finalist position for Most Family Friendly pub.

The judges noted how Colin and Kenny had raised the bar for pub gardens even higher since 2015, introducing a host of imaginative ideas to keep their garden on its winning streak including a family fun day and a beer festival which attracted hundreds and are now set to become regular events. New children’s rides have been installed, popcorn and candy floss machines added and outdoor seating increased in a bid to keep up with demand.

Colin and Kenny created the Cookhouse Pub & Carvery’s garden from an overgown unused yard when they took over the rundown pub in May 2015 and invested in a £500,000 refurbishment to revive its fortunes.

Colin and Kenny received their prestigious awards at a gala presentation evening in Liverpool from football legend and broadcaster Chris Kamara.

“Colin and Kenny take real pride in the garden and have thought through every detail to make it a really special, welcoming place. Like the pub, it’s brilliant for families, but cleverly laid out so that everyone is catered for. Locals and visitors have voted with their feet and it’s established itself as much-loved feature of the area,” says Lawson Mountstevens, Star Pubs & Bars Managing Director.

Says Colin “We have put our all into the garden, so it’s great to have defended our title for a second year. Winning a finalist position for Most Family Friendly pub is the icing on the cake. We set out to create a pub where all ages could enjoy themselves and to be commended for just that is fantastic.”
