Outstanding Licensees Recognised At The Star Awards

Star Pubs & Bars recognised the talents of its licensees at its annual Star Awards in Manchester’s Imperial War Museum this week. 130 licensees and their guests attended the gala ceremony which was hosted by Coronation Street’s Kym Marsh. Fourteen national awards were presented in areas ranging from social media and retailing to live sports and community engagement.

Notable achievements included:

  • Caygill & Smith’s Barrelhouse Bar & Grill in Edinburgh, which won the Best Bar Team and overall Star Pub of the Year awards.
  • Hickory’s Smokehouse, which was given the Team Training award and was a finalist in four other categories.
  •  PG Taverns, which received the Marketing Award for the second time for the Jolly Botanist in Edinburgh and was a finalist in three other categories.
  • Graham Anderson and Sharon Stanton, winners for the Eastfield Inn, Bristol which was crowned Most Family Friendly pub, the third time winning this category.

Claire Hall received the Famous for Food Award for the Spread Eagle in North Shields whilst Dianne Irving of the White Mare, Beckemet won the Pint Perfection Award.

Retail standards scores rose 10 per cent in Star pubs in its 2017 survey and the gap between the highest and lowest scoring pubs was its narrowest ever. The judges noted the rise in standards across all categories and said it was harder then ever to select the winners with so many skilled operators and great pubs in the Star estate.

Star Pubs & Bars managing director Lawson Mountstevens said: “The Star Awards is one of the high points of our year. It’s inspiring to have so much talent in one room. Like top operators in any sector, they are true entrepreneurs – always pushing the boundaries and experimenting with new ideas in order to deliver an exceptional experience to British pub goers.”
