Nottingham's Three Wheatsheaves wins National Best Pint Pub Award

The Three Wheatsheaves on Derby Road in Nottingham has beaten off competition from over 1,100 pubs to be named Pub with the Best Pint in our national awards.

The pub’s beer was judged against strict criteria ranging from taste, smell and.temperature to staff knowledge and service and scored top marks in every area with the judges describing it as ‘one of the best pints’ they’d ever tasted.

The judges said the quality of the beer had played a major part in the rapid turnaround of the Three Wheatsheaves by new licensees Tony and Stephen Martin who took over the pub in December last year.

Determined to restore the troubled local to its former glory as a great community pub, the couple undertook a £50,000 refurbishment, redecorating throughout and reinstating the pub’s real fires, making over the garden and children’s play area and adding Sky TV and BT Sport.

Believing their beer would be key to customers’ first impressions of the revamped pub, Tony and Stephen made it a priority. The couple deep cleaned the cellar, arranged specialist staff training to ensure knowledgeable service and introduced a range of nine draught beers including three cask ales. Eleven months on, the Three Wheatsheaves is scoring 100% for its beer in mystery visits, has secured casque mark approval and seen customers flocking back with trade up seven fold.

The couple have also made the pub known for its great value home cooked food introducing special deals such as a pint and a meal for £5 and their monthly Sunday offer of lunch for £1 with the purchase of a pint.

Tony and Stephen received the coveted award from football legend and broadcaster Chris Kamara at a gala ceremony in Liverpool and hope it will stand them in good stead for the pub’s first beer festival in December.

Says Tony, “To be recognised for all our hard work is the perfect end to our first year and a tribute to our fantastic staff. Stephen’s granddad was a director of Shipstone’s brewery so it’s great to have been able to continue his family’s pride in a great pint by winning this award.”

Lawson Mountstevens, Star Pubs & Bars’ Managing Director said: “The quality of a pint is the gold standard by which customers judge everything else in a pub and Tony and Stephen’s customers won’t be disappointed on any count. Their revival of the Three Wheatsheaves is testimony to their commitment and talent as licensees as well as to their great beer and food.”
