Major Investment Starts To Reopen Pub After A Three-Year Closure

Work starts this week on a £500,000 investment to reopen a pub in a high profile location on Abington Street in Northampton. The development is taking place at the former Rhubarb bar, which has been closed for three years, and is being undertaken by Heineken-owned Star Pubs & Bars and the pub’s new operator, Danny Fisher.

The refurbishment will create a contemporary pub serving coffee and food all day and providing a great place for a night out in the evenings. The business will be renamed The Wedgwood after the site’s original 1950’s pub. Work is expected to take three months with The Wedgwood expected to open in early March. 45 jobs will be created and Danny is actively recruiting for staff.*

The Wedgwood will be one of the biggest pub or restaurant developments in Northampton in recent years. It is a further sign of the regeneration of the town centre, with the relocation of university accommodation and council offices creating new demand for places to eat and drink in the middle of the town.

Outside the building will be fully redecorated and renovated, and there will be bi-fold doors that can be opened back on warm days to give The Wedgwood a café look. The upstairs roof terrace will be revamped and made into an all-weather garden for year-round use with an outdoor bar.

Inside the pub will be stripped out and fully refurbished. The ground floor will include the main bar, a new kitchen to enable food to be a focus and seating for 100 people. The look will be modern but with traditional features and natural finishes and a large central fire pit as a focal point.  A barista quality coffee machine is being installed and The Wedgwood will open at 10am to serve breakfast and brunch. State-of-the-art cellar dispense equipment will be put in, and The Wedgwood will specialise in cask ales with three on tap.

Upstairs Danny is filling a gap in the Northampton market by adding a poolroom and sports bar with the look of an old library and Sky TV and BT Sport. The space will be available for conferences and private functions and will also host DJs from around the UK on Thursday to Saturday nights.

“It’s exciting to be bringing such a prominent building back into use and adding to the wider investment in Northampton’s centre. I want The Wedgwood to be a place everyone feels comfortable in and enjoys,” says Danny.

Star Pubs & Bars operations director Tim Galligan said: “We feel fortunate that such an experienced operator as Danny is taking on the pub as their own and working with us to revive its fortunes and make it an asset to the centre of Northampton. Heineken is a passionate supporter of the great British pub and is investing in pubs like The Wedgwood to help them deliver excellent quality, attract customers and thrive at the heart of their communities for years to come.”
