Major £750k investment to rebuild and reopen historic Penzance pub

Star pub on Market Jew Street in Penzance

Star Pubs & Bars, HEINEKEN’s pub business, starts work this week on a major £750k project to rebuild and reopen the historic Star pub on Market Jew Street in Penzance.

Over recent months the pub has suffered from problems with its gable wall that was in danger of collapsing, requiring urgent, intensive structural work to save it.

The project will transform the Star, restoring it to its former glory as an outstanding traditional pub serving the needs of the whole community.

It is estimated that the work will take four to five months, with the Star scheduled to reopen in November. The pub has been closed since September last year whilst Star Pubs & Bars planned its revamp and sought the necessary approvals from the local council for the listed building’s restoration and transformation.

The project will completely refurbish the Star inside and out, including installing new toilets and a new kitchen. All work will be sympathetically carried out in keeping with the traditional character of the building. As well as introducing really good food, the pub will also serve premium coffee throughout the day.

Says Chris Jowsey, Trading Director, Star Pubs & Bars “It’s great to be able to start work on this investment that has required months of planning. We would like to thank neighbouring businesses and residents for their patience during the pub’s closure and apologise for any inconvenience caused by works to make safe the Star’s structural problems. We hope they find the changes worth the wait. The Star is a lovely building in a fantastic location. We want to make it once again, a place that everyone can use and enjoy; whether its shoppers and workers wanting a coffee or a snack or people looking for a nice lunch or evening meal out or just a great place to meet for a drink.”

Star Pubs & Bars is currently looking for a new licensee to lease the Star when it reopens. A further 12 jobs are also expected to be created.

Says Jowsey:  “We’re delighted to be investing in the Star’s long term future for residents and visitors to Penzance. To be successful in today’s market, pubs must improve their offering to customers and this means investing in pubs like the Star to create a welcoming and relevant environment for all customers.

“HEINEKEN is a passionate supporter of the great British pub. We have invested £600m purchasing and improving our Star Pubs & Bars estate since 2010 and this year we will be investing more than ever in our pubs. We now own around 1,200 pubs like the Star, the majority of which are operated as small independent businesses. What we need is real investment, innovation and professionalism in the pub sector to continue to attract customers back to the great British pub.”

Adds Jowsey, “Our investment will make the Star an excellent business opportunity.
