Local licensee honoured for quarter of a century at Saxilby pub

Mike Brown, licensee of The Anglers in Saxilby, has received a prestigious long-service award in recognition of his 25 years at the pub’s helm. 69-year-old Mike, a former electrician, still loves the job so much that he is about to sign a further five-year lease on the pub.

The award, from pub owners Star Pubs & Bars, is the second for Mike in recent weeks, with The Anglers also gaining Cask Marque accreditation with a five-star cellar rating for the quality of its cask ales.

Since moving to Saxilby in 1950, Mike has seen many changes. The village’s population has more than doubled and, of the original five pubs located there, only two remain.

Known as ‘the locals’ local’, The Anglers is Saxilby’s last traditional pub and is still at the heart of the community. It is a port of call for prospective residents wanting to find out more about the area, and Mike prides himself on providing a warm welcome. The pub supports many local charities, raising £20,000 for St Barnabas Hospice and £4,000 for Lincolnshire’s air ambulance over the past 25 years. The Anglers also provides meeting space for local groups such as the carp fishing club and the Scouts leaders, hosts fundraisers for good causes and continues to be a favourite place for villagers to celebrate special occasions, including christenings, birthdays and anniversaries.

Whilst Saxilby’s sports teams are dwindling, sport thrives at The Anglers. It boasts a busy boules court, darts and pool teams and its football team - Anglers FC – won this year’s County Cup and is in the Kelly Read Cup finals.

The Anglers serves no food, but Mike has introduced many new activities to retain its popularity. The pub runs numerous events to bring residents together, from quiz, live music and karaoke nights to poker and cribbage evenings, family fun days and dominoes and crib teams.

Says Mike, “I can’t imagine life without The Anglers. It’s a great privilege to wake up every morning and do a job you love. I’ve served generations of Saxilby families and meeting so many different people is the highlight.”

Adds Mike, who has been joined at the pub by his son Wayne, “We just want to keep The Anglers as a welcoming pub, not just for Saxilby but for the whole area.”

Paul Willis, Star Pubs & Bars business development manager, who presented the award to Mike, says: “To keep a pub so popular over so many years is an outstanding achievement and a real tribute to Mike’s great hospitality, passion and commitment. Mike is the quintessential mine host; he provides the warmest of welcomes and is a well-known figure who makes a big contribution to the community.”
