Investment Case Study Rose & Crown, Welwyn

Earlier this year, Star Pubs & Bars undertook a joint £550,000 refurbishment of the Grade II listed Rose & Crown in Welwyn with Hertfordshire based multiple operators The Fishermann Pub Group. The pub opened in May. Since opening trade has increased 10-fold.

The investment transformed the 17th century pub into a great quality traditional local, bringing an end to residents’ concerns for its future after years of temporary management. A derelict listed barn in the garden was renovated to provide extra space and a venue for private functions.

20 jobs were created on the back of the investment. The revamp upgraded the building while retaining and restoring original features such as flagstone floors, timber beams and an Inglenook fireplace. A kitchen was added so that food could be introduced. It now has a sports bar with two screens showing sports, plus a lounge bar with open fires, comfortable sofas and tables for dining. External improvements include the addition of a 40-cover terrace for alfresco eating and drinking and a separate family garden accommodating 80 people.

Pete Mann, co-owner of The Fishermann Pub Group, said: "The refurbishment has allowed us to zone our business and cater for everyone's different needs, indoors and out. We're delighted with how the pub is now performing and look forward to working with Star again in the future."
