Getting Into The Spirit

Patrick Solan has been so successful at turning round The Shakespeare in Durham, that, in agreement with Star, he’s converting some of his private accommodation into trading space to counter the queues of weekend customers at the tiny sixteenth century pub. Patrick’s office and domestic kitchen have become a commercial kitchen and a large living room is set to become a spirits bar filling a gap in the market. “Friday nights aren’t big in Durham anymore but Saturday nights now start at 1pm with coachloads of people coming into the city from the surrounding area. The changes will make The Shakespeare more of a destination and keep customers longer,” says Patrick. Gin and rum won’t be the only spirits on offer. The pub is promoted as one of England’s most haunted, attracting a steady year-round tourist trade.
