Colindale Local Crowned UK’s Community Pub Of The Year

The Chandos Arms in Colindale has beaten off strong competition from around the country to be crowned Community Pub of the Year in the UK in the John Smiths Great British Pub Awards.

Licensees Emily and Are Kolltveit received the award at a glittering ceremony at the Park Lane Hilton.

The award is a massive achievement for the Kolltveits who have taken the Chandos Arms from being a run down pub with a poor reputation to being named the best local in the UK in just three years.

Says Emily: “The award is a real recognition of all the hard work that has gone into turning round the Chandos Arms. It also recognises how much Colindale residents want a local pub and the tremendous support and involvement they’ve put into reviving it. The feedback we’re receiving from the community is overwhelming and due to popular demand we are now planning a celebration party.”

Since becoming licensees of the Chandos Arms in 2014, Emily and Are have gone all out to turn it into a hub for Colindale investing in a £50,000 refurbishment, introducing food, putting on events to bring people together and supporting local groups and charities.

Looking to the future, the couple aren’t resting on their laurels and are looking for further ways the pub can help the community. They are now launching the Chandos Arms as an official drop off point for donations to the Colindale Food Bank. “We’re appealing for non perishable products such as tinned foods, rice, pasta, toiletries, sugar and coffee. We’ll deliver them direct to the food bank,” says Emily.

The Great British Pub Awards have been running for 17 years and saw more than 1,000 pubs in the running for titles across 17 different categories.

Ed Beddington, editor of pub trade magazine, The Morning Advertiser, which organises the Great British Pub awards, said: “These awards celebrate everything that is so great about the Great British Pub, which is an institution the entire country should be proud of. I’m delighted The Chandos Arms has won the title of Community Pub of the Year. This is a pub that clearly stood out against a very competitive field and its recognition is much deserved.”
