Brunel in Saltash Benefits From £300k Refurbishment

Building work has started on a major £300k refurbishment of The Brunel in Saltash by Star Pubs & Bars and new licensee and local businessman, David Roberts, to create the only family friendly local in the centre of Saltash. The Brunel will be closed for around five weeks, reopening mid-November. 12 jobs will be created as a result of the changes to the pub. The changes include the introduction of home-cooked pub food, daytime coffee and snacks and monthly live entertainment.

The funds are being spent on a complete overhaul of the pub. Outside, The Brunel will be repainted dusky pink and slate grey with new signage and lighting. Inside, the pub is being brightened up and upgraded with quirky light fittings and furnishings referencing its 19th century namesake. Traditional features such as the two fires are being retained. The first floor ensuite letting rooms are also being redecorated.

The inside of The Brunel is being reconfigured to create a sports bar with Sky sports and BT sports, a lounge area and a flexible space which can be used for meetings, private functions and live entertainment which will include appearances from live bands playing soul and Motown music. A darts team has already been set up and David is keen to start a women’s darts team as well.  He’ll also be starting a regular pub quiz in the new year.

A new kitchen will enable the pub to offer freshly prepared pub classics, such as shepherd’s pie, fish & chips, stew, pies and ham egg and chips with Sunday roasts. Ingredients will be locally sourced with vegetables supplied by Cornish Farm Produce, meat from Steve Brown Butchers as well as fresh fish.

As part of the refurbishment, HEINEKEN is installing the latest beer dispense technology, its HEINEKEN SmartDispense system, which produces consistent superior quality draught beer and cider.  The Brunel will be the first pub in Saltash to benefit from the technology. There will be a range of cask ales, wines and local craft Cornish gins.

For David Roberts investment in The Brunel is an important step towards the revival of the high street, where he moved his other business – an embroidery company - at the end of 2016.  He explained: “The Brunel is in a high-profile location but has been a bit of an eyesore in recent years. The investment will bring The Brunel into the 21st century and be somewhere residents can be proud of.  It will be a great place for people to relax and enjoy themselves. The arrival of pop-up shops in Saltash is adding new colour to the town centre.  The refurbishment will I hope encourage others to invest in the revival of Saltash high street.”

Tim Galligan, operations director, Star Pubs & Bars said: “Pubs like The Brunel need ongoing investment to ensure they deliver the quality of experience customers want and to thrive in the long-term. The pub will host community events such as darts, quizzes and live music, and provide a private space for local businesses to meet and families and friends to host functions. At the moment people go to Plymouth for a night out - David intends to give them reasons to go out in Saltash.  We wish him every success in his new venture.”

The pub will open from 11.00 am for teas, coffees and snacks. To follow the progress of the refurbishment, visit the pub’s new Facebook page.
