Our Bringing Star Journeys to life series continues this week with Karen Moody Wood. Karen joined us as a Property Support Manager and is settling in very well. We had a chat to her about the first few months of her journey.

Job Title: Property Support Manager

What Part of Star Pubs & Bars do you work in and what do you do in your role?

I work in the Property department and my role as Property Support Manager includes, Health and Safety compliance, procurement, repairs and maintenance, financial analysis and ad hoc project management with a strong focus on customer service in all areas. In a nut shell I will be providing my full support to the property team to deliver great investments for the best value and a customer focused repairs and maintenance service, all within a safe environment!

What attracted you to Star Pubs & Bars?

I had feedback from a trusted colleague who told me what a great company Star Pubs and Bars was to work for. I did some research into the history of Star Pubs and Bars and HEINEKEN and was fascinated with the history of the company as well as the quality of the pubs in the company’s portfolio.

Can you tell us one of your highlight’s so far with Star Pubs & Bars?

Induction:

A truly motivational and thorough induction, you’re not thrown into your role after a cursory few days induction as with a lot of companies and left to sink or swim. With SP&B you’re provided with a personalised induction plan, modules to work through, contact details and allowed to manage your own induction diary and given plenty of time to complete this. Having over 30 years experience in the industry this is by far the best induction I’ve had!

Without exception everyone I have met so far has been really supportive and the camaraderie between all departments is so refreshing and to be honest, unexpected in such a large organisation. There is a genuine feeling that everyone wants to help and support you. There aren’t many companies out there that can truly boast a passionate and “one team” culture and it’s such a good feeling when family and friends ask me “how is your new job going” to be able to say “I absolutely love it”.

What tips would you give people looking to apply for a role in Star Pubs & Bars?

  2. Don’t be put off by the size of the company – despite being part of a global organisation with the most iconic beer brands on the planet, which might feel quite intimidating to those that have only worked for small or medium sized companies, Star Pubs and Bars is a close knit family culture where everyone takes pride and pleasure in helping others succeed
  3. Be positive – Star Pubs and Bars are more passionate about a “cultural fit” than being industry experienced or just starting out on your career journey
  4. Just be you – Star Pubs and Bars don’t try to change their team’s personality to fit the company they change the personality of the company to fit their team

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself

I did a charity swim with Olympic gold medal winner David Wilkie when I was 10 years old and came fifth in a national swimming gala when I was 11 for an under 14’s event

Karen has settled in very well and is already making a massive difference in the property team.
