All change for Witham pub following major investment

The former Albert pub on Chipping Hill in Witham opened its doors earlier this month under the new name of The Railway. Star Pubs & Bars has invested £106,000 in a complete refurbishment of the building after it was badly damaged in a fire last September. A further £24,000 has been invested by new licensees Carl and Sylvia Davidson, transforming it into an outstanding traditional pub designed to meet the needs of the community.

With 40 years experience of working in pubs between them, Carl and Sylvia had been searching for a pub they could take on as their own and after months of searching fell in love with The Railway as soon as they saw it.

The pub’s rename reflects its new direction and its position close to the station with the Davidsons aiming to provide refreshments for commuters and travellers.

The pub's interior decoration has benefited from a complete overhaul.  New toilets have been installed, the kitchen has been upgraded and there is a new dining area where a menu of excellent pub food will be served. Customers can now enjoy freshly prepared coffees and snacks in a comfortable seating area which boasts new sofas and a traditional coffee machine. Wi-Fi has been installed and The Railway will offer a wide range of cask ales and wines.

Said Sylvia “The Railway is a brilliant building in a fantastic location and despite its sad state we could immediately see its potential.  All it lacked was investment and some tender loving care. We’ve got the investment and we will certainly be putting in lots of tender loving care. It’s been very exciting to see our dreams for our first pub become a reality before our eyes and to receive such a warm welcome from people in the area.”

Chris Jowsey, trading director of Star Pubs & Bars said:  “We’re delighted that such committed and experienced operators as Sylvia and Carl have taken on the Railway and that together we are investing in its long term future for residents and visitors to Witham.”

“It’s tough running a pub with increasing competition for consumer’s disposable income.  To be successful in today’s market, pubs must improve their offering to customers and investment in pubs like The Railway is crucial in order to create a welcoming and relevant environment.”

“Star Pubs & Bars are a passionate supporter of the great British pub. We have invested £600m purchasing and improving our Star Pubs & Bars estate since 2010 and this year we will be investing more than ever in our pubs. We now own around 1,285 pubs like The Railway, the majority of which are operated as small independent businesses.  What we need is real investment, innovation and professionalism in the pub sector to continue to attract customers back to the great British pub.”
