£550k investment in Coachman, Whickham

Work has started on a major £550k refurbishment of The Coachman on Burnthouse Lane in Whickham by Star Pubs & Bars and new licensees, brothers Shaun and Michael O’Rourke, to restore the pub to its former glory.

One of Star Pubs & Bar’s biggest investments in the North East, the refurbishment will bring the pub into the 21st century and create 15 new jobs. It gives brothers Shaun and Michael, who have many years’ experience in the industry, an opportunity to realise their dream of running an outstanding pub that will cater for the local and wider community

The Coachman will reopen at the end of March in time for the longer, warmer days when customers can enjoy alfresco eating and drinking using the three new terraced outdoor areas.

As well as a complete internal and external redecoration of the pub, there will be new floor to ceiling windows at the front brightening the interior. The refurbished pub will have the capacity to cater for large occasions, such as weddings as well as smaller more intimate gatherings, as there will be several distinct areas in the pub for everyday overflow use that can be utilised for private function.

The menu will be traditional home-cooked pub food served throughout the day. It will focus on family dining in the week with a traditional Sunday lunch. A new state-of-the-art kitchen is being installed with facilities for Shaun and his team to butcher meat on the premises.
