£500k spend planned for Dundee pubs

Star Pubs & Bars has earmarked £500k to invest in two pubs in the Dundee area which it anticipates would create around 20 local jobs, and is looking for licensees to take on the pubs.

The pubs are The Mercantile on Commercial Street in Dundee and The Gunners Bar in Broughty Ferry.

It will serve cocktails and craft beers as well as daytime food and coffees.  The look will be a mix of exposed brick, metal and wood and feature eclectic vintage lighting and decorative objects throughout. A feature beer wall will show-case the pub’s beer varieties.

The ground floor bar will be repositioned at the back of the room, creating a larger drinking area with fixed and booth style seating for large groups as well as high tables and colourful bar stools.

The upstairs will have circular booth seating overlooking the downstairs bar where people can eat, have coffees and drinks.

The outside of the bar will have a complete makeover.   The period decorative masonry will be retained and more industrial style glazed windows and doors added along with a new colour scheme and new signage.

Nearly 200k will be spent transforming The Gunners Bar from an old-fashioned drinkers only pub into a dynamic rustic urban bar serving premium branded drinks and pizzas.

The windows at the front will be replaced with floor-to-ceiling glazing to increase visibility and light within the bar and a new external seating area created.  Inside, the bar will be repositioned and the two rooms knocked into one to create a lighter, airier bar area. The quirky design will include neon signs, grafitti art and retro features and lighting.

With competition for leisure spending increasing, Star believes pubs need to adapt to changing consumer demands and continue to invest to stay ahead of competitors. Its proposed investment in the Dundee area is focused on creating great local pubs and introducing good quality food and coffee for the whole community to enjoy.

The investment is part of a record £4 million HEINEKEN is investing in its Star Pubs & Bars estate in Scotland1 in 2017, doubling its 2016 investment and adding to the £6.45m invested in Scotland in the last three years.

Research carried out by Populus2 on behalf of HEINEKEN showed a fifth (21%) of Scottish adults visit their local pub once a week or more and a third (33%) once a fortnight or more and nearly half (45%) once a month.  Scottish pubgoers were clear about what they wanted from their local:

- 59% said they wanted their local to offer good food

- 31% a pub garden

- 23% free wi-fi

- 22% live sport on TV

- 16% want good coffee.

Gary Corney operations director for Star Pubs & Bars said: “HEINEKEN is passionate about creating great pubs and supporting the licensees that run them.  Invested pubs attract more customers, are visited more often by people using them for different occasions throughout the day.  Customers tend to buy more premium products which creates more profitable and sustainable businesses for licensees.

“Once we have licensees on board, our investment in upgrading The Mercantile and The Gunners Bar will create pubs that people want and use, enhance the local community and benefit the local economy.”
